Scope
Google "coffee shops Austin" and you find many Coffee Shops and restaurants. In order to narrow the field a bit I had to give myself a scope and set guidelines (as any project requires). Here's how I proceeded with this endeavor:
Coffee Shop Definition
- Serves espresso drinks
- Must have WiFi
- Fair amount of patrons sitting with a laptop, tablet or reading material
Geographic Scope
I confined myself to coffee shops addressed within the city of Austin. Pflugerville, Round Rock, Bee Caves and other surrounding cities/subdivisions, know that I love you no less, but my time/resources would have been a bit too stretched especially given the fact that patronized each shop by at least purchasing one cup of house coffee.
Cupping Data
Reflective of the city's dynamism, Austin's Coffee Shops are extremely unique in their design and layout. This posed challenges in data collection. However, best attempts were made to have data accuracy. Kindly send me a note on the Contact page if you have any corrections or comments.
- Data was collected during the last quarter of 2017
- WiFi speed is an avg of 3 speed tests per down/upload using www.speedtest.net
- P2P ratio represents the number of persons who need to share a plug
- P2P is calculated as number of spot divided by number of plugs/outlets
- The lower the P2P ratio the more convenient/easier access to a plug
- Spot is defined as the no. persons that can comfortably fit in a chair, bench or standing
- Spot was estimated for benches by number of butts that could comfortably fit on a bench
- Extension cords and power strips were counted as 1 plug/outlet.

- Menu ranges from
- Basic (Snack Bars & Pastries)
